André le Nôtre’s parterres de broderie are being reconstructed at Parc de Sceaux, as a reminder that the architect was born 400 years ago. The parterres are lined with box, and the whole approach seems to be different than the one use in reconstrutions in Holland.

I suggest that a recent Michael van Gessel design for a garden in Amsterdam was influenced by a very similar garden feature in Parc André Citroën (designed in 1992 by Alain Provost and Gilles Clément). The same feature may even have inspired the design of the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe, in Berlin.

Corten steel aesthetics: questionable

The strips of corten steel that are used to (re)create parterres de broderie are purely functional. Somehow -and to my dismay- the increasing interest in steel as a gardening material seems to result in ugly rims of steel around box hedges.
